The India–Pakistan cricket rivalry is more than a game — it’s an event that captures two nations. But former India spinner Harbhajan Singh believes politics should take precedence this time.
Nation First, Cricket Second
Harbhajan said India should consider skipping their Asia Cup 2025 clash with Pakistan, stressing that national security matters more than sport:
“Our soldiers sacrifice their lives, and we go to play cricket. Until these issues are resolved, cricket is a small matter.”
This is not the first time he has taken this stance — earlier this year, he and other players refused to face Pakistan in the World Championship of Legends.
Political Tensions and Match Uncertainty
With border tensions high, Harbhajan feels playing Pakistan sends the wrong message. The Asia Cup will run from September 9–28 in the UAE, with India and Pakistan set to meet on September 14. That game — and any potential rematch — could be in doubt if his view gains traction.
Mixed Reactions
Some support Harbhajan, saying national pride should come before cricket, while others believe sports should be kept separate from politics. The BCCI hasn’t given an official response yet, though in the past, matches against Pakistan have been cancelled during times of political tension.
Bigger Than Cricket
For Harbhajan and many others, an India–Pakistan match is about pride and identity. Whether the first ball is bowled or not, the debate has already overshadowed the game.
