Pakistan cricket is entering an important phase as Babar Azam joins the red-ball training camp in Lahore. This isn’t just routine practice — it’s key preparation for the much-anticipated Test series against South Africa in October.
What’s the Camp About?
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has set up a 20-day red-ball camp at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. It runs from September 9 to 28, giving players valuable time to prepare for the South Africa Tests.
This camp goes beyond regular training. The focus is on red-ball techniques, match simulations, and mental readiness — everything needed to perform in the longer format.
Who’s in the Squad?
A total of 11 players have been named for the camp, including Babar Azam:
-
Abdullah Shafique
-
Ali Raza
-
Azan Awais
-
Kamran Ghulam
-
Mohammad Ali
-
Mohammad Huraira
-
Mohammad Salman
-
Rohail Nazir
-
Sajid Khan
-
Shamyl Hussain
All of these players, who are not part of the Hanif Mohammad Trophy, must report to the NCA by September 8.
Notable Absentees
Some familiar names are missing. Mohammad Rizwan is playing for St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the CPL, while Naseem Shah is also involved in the tournament. Their absence means Pakistan will head into the South Africa series without two key players.
Who’s Running the Camp?
The camp is being led by Azhar Mahmood, Pakistan’s acting red-ball head coach, who is working with the National Cricket Academy staff to give players a balance of skills training and match-style practice.
It isn’t just batting and bowling drills. Fitness, discipline, and mental strength are also a big focus — all crucial for success in Test cricket.
Why This Camp Matters
This camp is more than a training routine. It marks the start of Pakistan’s campaign in the ICC World Test Championship (2025–27 cycle).
South Africa will play two Tests in Pakistan — the first in Lahore from October 12 to 16, and the second in Rawalpindi from October 20 to 24.
Looking Ahead
Babar Azam’s presence is a big plus for Pakistan. With a carefully picked squad and Azhar Mahmood leading the camp, the team looks set to prepare hard for the South Africa Tests.
The next few weeks will be vital in shaping not only this series but also Pakistan’s long-term red-ball plans.
